Nine teams and over 110 participants from across the state competed in an Olympic-style skills assessment that focused on fire safety, hazmat awareness, search and rescue, grid search, medical operations, triage, etc. MSU CERT was declared the overall winner of the 2014 MS CERT Olympics and brought home 5 individual gold medals, 2 silvers, and one 1 bronze in individual skills assessments. View more images MSU CERT Ropes Course and Leadership Challenge In February 2014, MSU CERT members took part in a Leadership Challenge as well as a Low and High Ropes Course held at Camp Seminole, just outside of Starkville. In times of response and extreme stress, it is critical for responders to enact strong decision making, communication, and teamwork skills. This program strengthened all of these skills and enabled many team members to conquer some of their pre-existing fears. View more images MSU CERT Skills Refresher and Teachback Series Throughout each year, MSU CERT conducts a series of teachbacks that enable members to refresh skills learned in CERT Training. These are hands-on initiatives conducted by team members for team members in order to create as continuous learning environment. Additionally, MSU CERT incorporates additional training and professional development, including blood borne pathogen training, helicopter landing zone maintenance training, etc. View more images Damage Assessment Training (DAT) MSU CERT consistently looks for ways in which to serve the university community in times of need. One reactive function could be as a Damage Assessment Team. MSU CERT members recently completed a Damage Assessment Training course offered by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The training covered a wide variety of emergency response functions including understanding the local role and area coordinator role in the Damage Assessment process. Additionally, the training covered the preparation of the Initial Damage Assessment (IDA) and conducting the IDA, among other areas. Emergency Preparedness Week MSU CERT coordinated its 2nd annual Emergency Preparedness Week, which included a wide variety of preparation, response, and threat awareness programs, including programs that discussed campus emergency management resources, fire extinguisher training, extreme weather and storm chase presentations as well as "Show and Tell" programs where local, state, and military groups could showcase their resources and equipment used in emergency response and disaster management. The week also included the much-heralded P.R.E.P. (Personal Readiness and Emergency Preparation) workshop. View more images Local First Responder Recognition Program In September, MSU CERT recognized National Preparedness Month. Saturday, September 21, prior to the kickoff of the MSU/Troy football game, fans in Davis Wade Stadium honored the hard work and dedication of the following local response agencies: the MSU Police Department, Starkville Police Department, Starkville Fire Department, Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, Oktibbeha County Emergency Management Agency and E-911, Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Departments, and Oktibbeha County Hospital Emergency Medical Services. We commend these agencies for their tireless service and commitment to the safety and security of our community. Transit Terrorist Tools and Tactics In August, 2013, MSU CERT members participated as role players in a specialized anti-terrorism course offered to officials in local law enforcement, transit, public health, hazardous materials, fire service, emergency management, and emergency medical services, among others. The three day course, entitled Transit Terrorist Tools and Tactics (4T) and developed and taught by the National Center for Biomedical Research and Training, addressed the technical aspects of detecting, deterring, preventing, mitigating and responding to a potential CBRNE attack directed against a transit system facility or other large capacity facilities. A Community Awareness Program coordinated by the MSU Campus-Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT) and the Maroon Volunteer Center 2013 MS CERT Conference The annual Mississippi CERT Conference was held on June 28-30, 2013 at the Cabot Lodge in Ridgeland, MS. The conference allowed CERT teams from around the state to attend classes ranging from working with patients with disabilities to search and rescue. As part of a planned exercise, an F3 tornado struck the Cabot Lodge. This scenario provided the CERT teams opportunities to practice their skills for responding to real disasters. View more images Fire Safety Training Members of the MSU CERT team practice proper use a fire extiniguisher to extinguish a kitchen fire. These types of training are passed to friends, family, and neighbors in the community. Tell me more Extrication Drill MSU CERT Members practice extricating a victim from debris. This is a skill that is essential should the team respond to a building collapse or tornado.
